In response to the clearly patriarchal domination in Chile and other societies, PASMI hopes to stimulate reflection about gender discrimination, violence and “dehumanisation” on all levels: in our work, in our families, in our relationships, in our institutions, and in acts as natural as giving birth. Our work is focussed in two areas:

  • Violence against women
  • Reproductive rights

Violence against women…

“Not one woman less,
not one more death…”

During the first season of The lady from the sea (2006) we felt the impact that this play could have in raising awareness about the issues of gender violence and femicide, and to highlight the violence that is inherent and experienced as “normal” in Chilean society.

PASMI is committed to the eradication of gender violence in all its forms, and to actively use our theatre skills to support the creation of a non-violent society. PASMI strategies are:

- Tours of “The lady from the sea” to marginalised sectors of Santiago and regions, in order to strengthen and promote the work of community groups in response to this issue. Performances for general public, women and high school students.The Spanish Cultural Centre has auspiced four PASMI tours to peripheral communities in Santiago:

*July-August 2007;
*January-April 2008;
*LATINA URBANA Project from November 2008 to January 2009 (arts in action against gender violence – theatre, murals, hip hop); and
*+M-M (more women, less murders) between Abril-June 2009, Stage 1 and Stage 2, more arts action against gender violence, making our voices heard in public places.

In 2010, PASMI continues these actions in a new tour called “What are you going to do?” in seven marginalised sectors of Santiago, building on community connections already made, and spreading the network of resistance to gender violence.

Reproductive Rights…

“The first moment of our
life together…”

In 2002, the PASMI show Birth… We are modern women, aren’t we? was premiered. The show denounces the “dehumanisation” that currently exists in the birth process, where this natural human act is intervened routinely in the name of technology, economy and modernity.

Pursuing our goal of creating awareness about reproductive rights, in 2005 we presented the production “Birth… ”, in two public health centres in low income sectors of Santiago :

- Santa Anita Health Centre, Lo Prado
- Garín Family Health Centre, Quinta Normal
(Project funded by the National Women´s Service and the National Youth Institute)

This “pilot” project confirmed that by using an “Action Theatre” format, through which the play is performed “without warning” in the waiting room of the health centre, it is possible to spontaneously capture the attention of health professionals and centre users, thereby transforming their daily environment, and delivering images, emotions and food for discussion.

Where interest exists, “Birth…We are modern women, aren´t we?” continues to be performed. ..To stimulate greater protagonism by mothers and fathers in the birth of their children, one of the few human acts that we still can experience …
